Batting fightback delivers win for Stags

St Fagans made the trip to Aberdare where skipper, Chris Thorne, lost the toss and his team were put in to bat.

Thorne’s day didn’t get any better as he fell to an excellent caught and bowled by Nathan Spain, who finished with an economical spell of 1-12 off five overs.

Things went from bad to worse as fellow opener, Chris Lawlor, toe-ended a full toss from Tim Godsall straight to John Derrick at midwicket.

Matt Thompson entered the crease in fine fettle following an excellent century a week earlier against Panteg. When Thompson tickled a wide legside delivery to the keeper, Stags’ smiles in the Aberdare sunshine quickly turned upside down.

Frowns then started to appear when young star, Adam Keane, top edged a sweep, after making a very cultured 29. At 80-4, St Fagans were reeling and might have felt it was going to be one of those days!

However, the experience of Jamie Sylvester (59) and quality strokeplay of the in-form Andrew Leering (70) rescued the Stags from a rather precarious position, which resulted in the innings coming to a close at 208-6 off the team’s allocated 50 overs.

With a decent score on a slow spring wicket, the Stags bowling attack set about defending the score in good fashion with former Ammanford seamer, Tom ‘Tatts’ Maynard taking an early breakthrough.

Maynard’s impressive start for the club continued with the important wicket of Steve Manning, before the spin partnership of Sylvester and Jamie Stephens. made serious inroads into the Aberdare batting line-up.

Both spinners finished their excellent spells with 3 wickets apiece before Maynard cleaned up the tail finishing with cracking figures of 4-14 off his 9 overs. Aberdare finished all out for 91.

First win of the league season in the bag for St Fagans and next up for the the 1st XI is Clydach at Crofft-y-Genau Road on Saturday.
