Maynard stars again with the ball

St Fagans 1sts stormed to victory at Carmarthen Wanderers thanks to a superb spell of bowling from Tom ‘Tatts’ Maynard.

The former Ammanford and Carmarthen boy blitzed through the opposition’s top order, taking the crucial scalps of Stephen Inward and Gareth Thomas.

The Stags won the toss and bowled on a pitch which was favourable to any type of bowler – be it seamer, spinner or dibbly dobbler! That despite the Captain being warned by a number of people to always bat first down West!

However, Maynard’s immaculate line and length, saved the skipper’s bacon and resulted in him finishing with 5-15 after bowling his allocated ten overs on the bounce. An excellent effort which combined both patience and skill on a deck which could have easily seen bowlers getting too greedy.

He was ably assisted by Gareth Weatherall who nabbed 3-14 and a player who continues to grow as a force at 1st XI level since his breakthrough from the 2nd XI two seasons ago. Even if he is getting so big he’s making it bounce!

Some wagging of the tail saw Carmarthen Wanderers finish on 87 all out with Jamie Sylvester and Andrew Leering picking up a wicket apiece.

While many recognised the score was somewhat under par, the old adage of ‘only judging a pitch after two sides have batted on it’ began to rung true early on in the Stags reply.

This was something Carmarthen’s own players acknowledged, with shouts of “it’s like being in Mumbai” being heard on a number of occasions. While the Stags did the damage through seam, Carmarthen were certainly seeing some success through spin.

This resulted in the fall of four wickets but the calm and assured batting of Matt Thompson (23*) in company with Sylvester saw the Stags home, with a magnificent six by Tommo over extra cover bringing the game to its conclusion. Apparently, that shot was due to a bet with the opposition keeper but we couldn’t possibly comment.

Then the drinking began…thank you to Carmarthen for the shots and hospitality…then the bus set off on its way home…via one or two drinking holes of course!

Final word of thanks to Dave Coaches for being such an excellent driver on the day! Picture above!
